Elko and Northeast Nevada are high (5,000 - 11,000 feet in altitude). It's a desert, albeit with wonderful fishing spots, mountaintops, sky so huge you can see the curvature of the earth. There's gold in these here hills, which creates a prosperous local economy. There are cattle ranches here, too -- cowboys (and girls) along with the miners.
